Robert Mapplethorpe.............

I recently read Just Kids, a memoir by Patti Smith of her relationship with artist, Robert Mapplethorpe centered in NYC in 70's.  It is a fascinating account of a historic time and place in terms of art and artists, musicians and poets.  In her book, Patti tells of Sam Wagstaff who would become Robert's patron, friend and lover and who is widely credited with launching Robert's career.

Sam was from a wealthy NY family and become one of the biggest collectors of photographic art in a time when it was not an acceptable art medium.  Most of his vast collection now resides in the J. Paul Getty Museum in California.

In a new book Wagstaff: Before and After Mapplethorpe, A Biography, the author writes about Sam ".....playing a pivotal role in photography's acceptance into the art firmament."
