"When in the Course of human events.........."

It might be because I am reading a wonderful book entitled, Letters of Note - Correspondence Deserving of a Wider Audience, that made me want to read the Declaration of Independence this 4th of July or maybe it is because this will be the 100th post since starting my blog.  Whatever the reason, I am glad I read it and I hope you will too.

I took the "liberty" of separating the Declaration into three sections to make it easier to read and to encapsulate the sentiment of each section. 





The above is the "introductory" of the Declaration and it says, firstly that they have to "declare the causes which impel them to separation."   Secondly, the document declares what they believe in or are "self-evident."  ".....that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness....."  I think we all remember those words.  But it goes on to say ".... that Governments are instituated among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."  - That's us "the consent of the governed."     


The above section of the Declaration are the "offences" of the King of England against the Colonies.


This section sets out the facts that the Colonies tried repeatedly to rectify their grievances with the King of England and since their petitions "fell on deaf ears" this is the reason that they now annouce their Separation and their intentions to rule as Independent States. "...... to have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce and to do all other acts and things which Independent States may of right do."
