I've been noticing for a while now, in many magazines, a resurgence of the use of fashion illustrations over photography. Fashion illustrations have been on the decline for decades, however, in the last couple of years they have been popping up on ad campaigns for high profile fashion brands including Louis Vuitton, Prada, Chanel, Dior, Tiffany's and on the covers of Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and Elle, just to name a few. While photography has an immediacy advantage, its over saturation and digitally enhanced, slick photos have lost a human element. There is something witty and charming about fashion illustrations and the 'not perfect' quality that I find appealing, not just has an advertising vehicle, but also as an art form.
